Company History

Our Story

Founded in 1980, Women's & Breast Imaging (WBI) is Perth’s first and only private clinic dedicated exclusively to diagnostic breast imaging. The clinic was established by Dr Julian Frayne, whose vision was inspired by Swedish radiologist Dr Laszlo Tabar and the life-saving potential of early breast cancer detection through screening mammography.

Pioneering Breast Imaging in WA
WBI began in Subiaco using xeromammography, offering diagnostic services to symptomatic women. As demand grew, the clinic expanded and relocated to a heritage-listed house in Cottesloe, creating a warm and welcoming environment for patients.
Over the years, WBI introduced cutting-edge technologies including:
• Film-screen mammography
• Stereotactic fine needle aspiration (SFNA)
• Ultrasound-guided biopsies
• Vacuum-assisted core biopsy
• Full-field digital mammography

WBI was the first clinic in the Southern Hemisphere to install a prone-table biopsy unit, and its team trained internationally to stay at the forefront of breast imaging techniques.

Collaborative Care
WBI has always embraced a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with pathologists and breast surgeons to ensure accurate diagnosis and optimal patient outcomes. The clinic’s research contributions have been published in leading medical journals, reinforcing its reputation for excellence.

Leadership & Legacy
Senior Mammographer Jan Townsend played a pivotal role in clinical operations, staff training, and education. Her commitment to professional development and teaching helped shape the clinic’s high standards.
When Dr Frayne retired, the clinic was managed by Dr Peter Goodwin and John Hogg. During this time, Dr Vanessa Atienza-Hipolito, a highly skilled radiologist also working with BreastScreen WA, began doing locum work at WBI. In 2014, she was offered the opportunity to continue the legacy of WBI.

Dr Vanessa Atienza-Hipolito: Continuing the Legacy
With courage and vision, Dr Vanessa Atienza-Hipolito and her husband Glenn Hipolito took a leap of faith and acquired WBI in 2014. Under her leadership, the clinic has flourished, expanding to include a second location in Murdoch and offering a wide range of advanced imaging and interventional services.

Dr Vanessa is a fellowship-trained subspecialist in Breast Imaging, Musculoskeletal Imaging, Interventional and Vascular Radiology, and Paediatric Radiology. She is also an Adjunct Clinical Senior Lecturer at Curtin University, UWA, and Edith Cowan University, mentoring future healthcare professionals.

Her accolades include:
• Filipino-Australian of the Year 2023
• Breast Radiologist of the Year (UK, 2022)
• Multiple awards for leadership, innovation, and community impact

Dr Vanessa’s approach is deeply patient-centric, combining expertise with compassion. She is a published author, speaker, and advocate for women’s health, diversity, and inclusion in medicine. Her story from arriving in Perth in 2005 to becoming a beacon of excellence in breast imaging is a testament to dedication and purpose.
